C-reactive protein (CRP) is an acute phase reactant providing a highly sensitive indicator of inflammatory conditions, infections and other disease states where tissue necrosis occurs. Measurements are useful in the detection of infection, tissue injury, inflammatory disorders and associated diseases such as inflammatory bowel disease and rheumatic diseases. Low level CRP is now routinely measured in cardiac risk stratification.
